Awel yr Awen

Secluded in the middle of a 72-acre organic farm in the Aeron valley, Awel yr Awen campsite is a deeply peaceful place to retreat to and unwind in the beauty of nature. With just eight pitches, each one separate in its own area of the meadow well away from roads and towns, it is an oasis of peace and quiet.

Each pitch has its own campfire; the dark skies here reveal myriad stars, often accompanied by the hooting of families of owls - a great way to relax after days out at the beach, walking the coastal path or mountains, or visiting one of the many beautiful sites in this part of Wales.

The eight spacious pitches are spread out in an historic meadow, now enjoying a gradual 're-wilding'. Red kites, buzzards, swallows, herons and a host of smaller birds are regular visitors. Foxes and badgers live here too - but you'll have to be very quiet if you want to see them.

Come with your own tent or stay in one of our gorgeous bell-tents with mattresses and bedding provided. The field is equipped with eco-toilets and hot gas-powered showers, as well as sinks for washing-up. The camping field is largely a car-free zone once you have finished unloading, with parking available in the nearby farmyard.

Awel yr Awen means 'breeze of the muse'; in the 1940s, poet Dylan Thomas lived and wrote at Gelli, the 17 and 18th century country farmhouse. Locals remember how he used to sit under the great western red cedar near the house, drinking a mug of fresh milk straight from the milking parlour. Owned and loved by the Thorpe family since 1980, the house is a family home to three generations.
